Astrophytum CAPRICORNE 'MAJOR' - Goat's horn cactus 'Major', Astrophytum capricorne 'Major'.
Astrophytum is a genus of succulent plants in the cactus family (Cactaceae), comprising 6 species and numerous varieties and forms, growing on rocky and calcareous soils in the foothills and mountains of northeastern Mexico and Texas.
Representatives of the genus are known for their solitary, globose or cylindrical, ribbed bodies and virtually complete absence of spines, although some species do have a few curved needles. The surface can be smooth or covered with white flecks forming unusual, light-colored, felt-like, marbled patterns on the stem surface that are capable of absorbing moisture. There are no leaves; the plant body is green, often with a glaucous bloom, adorned with areoles bearing spines.
These cacti grow very slowly, but in return bloom early with large, funnel-shaped, yellow flowers, sometimes with a red center, situated at the apex of the stem. The flowers usually fade after two to three days. With proper care, flowering lasts for an extended period, from spring to late autumn. Fleshy pubescent fruits with thin skin contain black or brown seeds.
Goat's horn cactus has unique, bizarrely curved spines resembling goat horns and light-colored flecks on a dark-green stem. The stem can reach 20-25 cm (8-10 in) in length and 12 cm (4.7 in) in diameter, having no lateral shoots. There are up to 9 clearly defined ribs on the stem. The areoles have light-gray wool. Spines up to 7 cm (2.8 in) in length are brown or gray. Yellow flowers are up to 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter. The variety 'Major' has numerous silvery flecks and nearly black spines.
