Sowing and germination
sowing is necessary to more fully utilize the available moisture reserves in the soil and strengthen the seedlings before the onset of hot weather. To obtain uniform seedlings during spring sowing, sea buckthorn seeds need to be stratified in damp sand for a month under conditions of low but positive temperature (from 0 to +5º). Variable temperatures are recommended. Pre-sowing soaking of seeds in water for 10 days also gives good results. This method is recommended for small batches of seeds. Unlike the seeds of many tree species, sea buckthorn seeds do not have a dormant period and germinate well both when sown soon after ripening, and when dry stored in a room without lengthy pre-sowing preparation. During seed propagation, the most important economic characteristics of the parental forms are lost, which explains their heterozygosity. Approximately 50% of seedlings are male.
