Echeveria STRICTIFLORA, Bustamante - Desert savior, Strict-flowered echeveria, Bustamante echeveria, Hen and chicks, Echeveria strictiflora.
Echeveria is a large genus in the stonecrop family (Crassulaceae), numbering about 150 species of succulent perennials distributed in semi-arid regions of Central America, Mexico, and northwestern South America - from Texas to Argentina. The center of species diversity is concentrated in Mexico. Most species inhabit rocky slopes, screes, dry gorges, and mountain plateaus with good drainage and intense lighting.
Echeverias are evergreen rosette succulents without a true stem or with a short leafy stem. The leaves are fleshy, with a waxy or powdery coating (farina), ranging from rounded to lanceolate, often with a colored tip or margin. In many species, lateral offsets form over time, earning the plants the popular common name "hen and chicks". The plants are polycarpic - blooming and fruiting repeatedly throughout their lives.
The inflorescence is a one- or many-flowered cincinnus on an arching peduncle rising from the center or base of the rosette. The flowers are tubular, nodding, usually in red, orange, or yellow shades, pollinated predominantly by hummingbirds and insects. The fruits are small follicles; seeds are tiny and numerous.
Echeveria strictiflora is a species originating from southern Texas and northeastern Mexico, where it grows in the Chihuahuan Desert on rocky and gravelly slopes in the states of Coahuila, Chihuahua, Durango, and Nuevo León. The rosette is stemless or on a very short stem, up to 15 cm (5.9 in) across; the leaves are narrow, tapering toward the base and pointed at the tip, up to 9 cm (3.5 in) long and about 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, grayish-green or brownish-green, sometimes with a reddish margin. In the form from Bustamante, leaves are covered with a dense whitish waxy coating, giving the rosette a cool glaucous-gray hue.
Flowering occurs in summer. The peduncle is arching, usually unbranched, rising to a height of up to 25 cm (9.8 in). The flowers are narrow, bell-shaped, pinkish-red at the base, yellowish-red above, and orange inside.
