Sowing and germination

The seeds of the serviceberry are small, sickle-shaped, brown, up to 5 mm long, located in the juicy fruits. To germinate, they need cold, damp stratification: the seeds are mixed with wet sand and kept for 3-4 months at a temperature of 2-5°C. Scarification is not required. The best time for sowing is the end of summer, immediately after collecting and processing the seeds: in this case, stratification occurs naturally. Late autumn crops may not sprout at all or produce non-viable seedlings. After stratification, the seeds are kept for 1-2 hours in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate, then soaked for 12-24 hours in warm water with the addition of a growth stimulator: balanced plant vitamin supplement, natural plant growth stimulant, amino-acid plant fertilizer, anti-stress adaptogen solution or root development stimulant.
