Phytolacca DIOICA - Dioecious pokeweed, Phytolacca dioica, Ombu.
Phytolacca, or pokeweed, is a genus in the pokeweed family (Phytolaccaceae), comprising about two dozen species of herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees. Most species originate from the Americas and East Asia.
Plants with alternate, long-petioled entire leaves and small apetalous flowers gathered in dense racemose inflorescences. The fruit is a juicy berry, dark in most species.
Dioecious pokeweed differs sharply from its relatives in size: it is the only species in the genus that grows into a true tree. Its native range covers northern Argentina, southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia, where it grows in subtropical forests, open woodlands, and savannas on low plateaus.
Dioecious pokeweed is an evergreen tree with a massive, often heavily shortened trunk that broadens at the very ground into a wide, gentle cone. The crown is dome-shaped, dense, broad, and low-hanging.
Leaves are dark green, leathery, oval or elliptical, 10-15 cm (4-6 in) long, with pinkish veins. Flowering is very abundant in late spring and early summer, with small yellowish-white flowers in drooping racemes. Male specimens differ from female ones by numerous stamens. The fruits are greenish-yellow flattened berries just under 1 cm (0.4 in) across, ripening by late summer.
