Sowing and germination
Before planting, seeds are disinfected for 10 minutes in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, then air-dried and superficially sown in a sterilized substrate consisting of leaf soil (completely rotted), washed river sand and finely crushed charcoal in a ratio of 1:1:1/2, good drainage is required. The crops are moistened with a spray bottle, covered with film and germinated in the light, but not in the sun, at a temperature of 15-20°C. The seedlings need ventilation. It is necessary to avoid waterlogging and drying out of crops. Shoots appear within 7–14 days. The maximum germination period can be more than 30 days. After 2–3 true spines appear, the seedlings are planted into containers of appropriate size, and the next transplant is carried out next year. Only when the seedling reaches 2 years of age can it be cared for like adult plants, but it must be gradually accustomed to the conditions of care.
