Tillandsia SUEAE - Sue's tillandsia, Tillandsia sueae.
An air plant capable of growing without a pot or roots!
The genus is named in honor of the Swedish botanist Elias Tillandz (1640-1693). More than 400 species are known, distributed from the southeastern United States to Argentina and Chile. Its native habitat is Ecuador and Peru, where it grows at elevations up to 850 m (2790 ft) above sea level in forests.
Most Tillandsia species use their roots to attach to trees or rocks and absorb moisture through their leaves, which classifies them as epiphytes. Moisture absorption occurs through small scales on their leaves called trichomes.
These trichomes are precisely what gives many atmospheric tillandsias their silvery or gray color. There is an enormous variety in size, shape, texture, flower form, and color among bromeliads. Many of these unique plants surprisingly change color when preparing to bloom. Some have a very cloying and mutable scent. Since tillandsias are epiphytes, the mounting material used is limited only by your imagination. These hardy plants adapt to a wide range of ambient conditions and require minimal care.
Sue's tillandsia is a herbaceous epiphytic evergreen plant native to Mexico.
