Huernia HYSTRIX - Porcupine huernia, Huernia hystrix.
Huernia is a genus of succulent plants in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae), belonging to the stapeliad succulent group and comprising several dozen species distributed in Eastern and Southern Africa, as well as the southwestern Arabian Peninsula. In nature, members of the genus occur in dry scrub communities, savannas, rocky places, among grasses, under the shelter of shrubs, and in rock crevices where the soil dries quickly after rains.
The plants develop as low perennial succulents with fleshy branching shoots. Stems are usually four-, five-, or many-angled, green, grayish-green, brownish, or reddening in the sun, with toothed ribs and reduced leaves in the form of small scales. The root system is comparatively shallow, so huernias are particularly sensitive to heavy, wet soil and stagnant water.
Flowers in huernias are solitary or gathered in small clusters, most often developing near the base of young shoots. The corolla is fleshy, star-shaped, campanulate, or cup-shaped, with five lobes, complex patterning, warts, papillae, hairs, or a velvety surface. In many species, flowers have a specific odor that attracts pollinating flies. After pollination, paired follicles form with numerous flat seeds equipped with a silky plume.
Porcupine huernia generates the greatest interest. The clump is fairly low-growing, reaching 5-12 cm (2.0-4.7 in) in height, but spreading 30 cm (11.8 in) or even wider. Drooping pale green five-angled shoots have thick teeth pointed upward. Pedicels reach 6 cm (2.4 in) in length. The corolla resembles a bird's nest in shape. The sepals are bent backwards strongly, with their tips joining near the pedicel, resulting in a distinctive torus or doughnut shape attached to a broad tube about 1.5 cm (0.6 in) in diameter. In addition, the surface of the corolla bears numerous fleshy, thick papillae measuring 3.5 to 5.5 mm (0.14 to 0.22 in) long, giving the flower a spiky-shaggy appearance. The color of the flowers together with the papillae is striped, whitish-burgundy.
