A rare, collectible plant!
'Living Stones' seed series.
Vanheerdea is a genus of rare plants in the ice plant family (Aizoaceae), comprising only 2 species. In the natural habitat, they grow in several regions of South Africa.
Compact perennial low-growing plants form dense clumps up to 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter, bearing only a pair of leaves on very short branches during dry periods. Deep rhizomes of the plant help extract moisture. Opposite leaves are pressed against each other and joined at the base, forming a solid clump. The shape of the leaves varies from rounded and ovate to keeled and toothed. Leaves can also be pubescent or entirely glabrous, and the color palette ranges from light green tones with yellow or red shades to purple.
Solitary flowers, or clusters of 2-3, arise from leaf axils. The diameter of each highly fragrant flower is 3-5 cm (1.2-2 in); they open during the day and close at night. Nearly three-whorled yellow or yellow-orange petals rest on 5-9 unequal rounded sepals. After flowering, capsule fruits with 7-15 locules form.
Vanheerdea primosii is a dwarf compact perennial succulent native to South Africa, growing as a single dense body of 20-40 branches with bilobed light green leaves. Paired thick ovate leaf pairs 4-6 cm (1.6-2.4 in) long and 2.5-3 cm (1-1.2 in) wide grow on very short branches. The small leaves, joined at the base, diverge at about 1/3 height into triangular, flattened, pointed teeth of green, purple, and red coloration.
In early spring it blooms, with one to three per body, fragrant three-whorled yellow or orange flowers 2-4 cm (0.8-1.6 in) in diameter, which open during the day and close at night. After flowering, fruits appear consisting of 8-12 capsules filled with many very small brown seeds.
