Mammillaria BOCASANA 'ROSEIFLORA' - Pink Powder Puff Cactus, Mammillaria bocasana 'Roseiflora'.
Mammillaria is a large genus of low-growing succulent plants in the Cactus family (Cactaceae), comprising about 170-200 species distributed mainly in Mexico, as well as in the southern United States, Central America, the Caribbean region, and northern South America. In nature, members of the genus occur in deserts, semi-deserts, dry shrublands, tropical deciduous forests, on limestone slopes, rocky plains, and in mountainous areas with bright sun and well-drained soils.
Plants usually develop as solitary or clustering spherical, flattened-spherical, cylindrical, or short-columnar cacti. Instead of ribs, they have individual tubercles, or pods, at the apices of which are areoles with radial and central spines. In many species, wool, bristles, buds, flowers, and fruits form in the axils between tubercles.
Flowers usually form in a ring closer to the apex of the stem, and can be white, cream, yellow, pink, red, or purple. After pollination, elongated or club-shaped fruits develop, often red or pink, containing small brown or black seeds with a pitted or reticulate surface.
Powder puff cactus is a cactus whose stem has a round and elongated shape. The diameter of the stem can reach 5 cm (2.0 in). The height of mature cacti is 8-10 cm (3.1-3.9 in). At the base, the rootstock branches into several stems forming a colony. A feature of the species is that different subspecies and cultivars differ significantly in appearance. Some have weak and slender spines or, conversely, very long and strong ones. Brown hooked spines, 8 to 10 mm (0.3 to 0.4 in) long, are located on a dark-green stem covered with silvery down. Spines on the tubercles have a yellowish tint.
It flowers in spring, bearing small pink-tinted flowers on the upper part of the stem. The base of the flower is hidden among tubercles with spines, and only the petal part remains visible on the surface. Petals up to 1 cm (0.4 in) long are pointed at the ends. If the cactus was pollinated, elongated fruits tinted in pinkish-red shades will appear on it. The tones in which the flowers are colored can vary from cream to rich pink.
