Echinocereus NIVOSUS - Snowy hedgehog cactus, Echinocereus nivosus.
Echinocereus is a genus of cacti in the cactus family (Cactaceae), numbering about 100 species growing in the arid regions of North America. Cacti of this genus are known for their lush flowering, variety of forms, and endurance under adverse conditions.
The plants vary from globose to cylindrical, solitary and clustering. Ribs are distinct, with large areoles. Spines can be long, slender, rigid, or finely combed, as in species with pectinate arrangement. Flowers are large, bright, fragrant, blooming at the apex of the shoot. Fruits are fleshy and can be edible. Seeds are rounded, small, and dark.
Snowy hedgehog cactus is a miniature cactus with a cylindrical solitary or sparingly branching stem up to 8-12 cm (3.1-4.7 in) tall and about 4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter. The ribs are weakly pronounced, and areoles are densely covered with white bristles creating a "snow-covered" appearance. Spines are slender, numerous, white, slightly projecting.
It blooms in spring. Flowers are large, up to 6 cm (2.4 in) in diameter, deep pink or lilac with a contrasting white center. They are located closer to the top of the stem. Fruits are green or pink, oval, fleshy. Seeds are dark, small.
