Echinocereus SUBINERMIS 'OCHOTERENAE' - Ochoterena's spineless echinocereus, Echinocereus subinermis ochoterenae.
Echinocereus is a genus of cacti in the family Cactaceae, comprising about 100 species native to the arid regions of North America. Cacti of this genus are known for their lavish flowering, diversity of forms, and resilience to adverse conditions.
The plants vary from globose to cylindrical, solitary and clustering. The ribs are distinct, with large areoles. Spines can be long, slender, rigid, or finely pectinate, as in species with comb-like arrangements. The flowers are large, bright, fragrant, opening at the top of the shoot. The fruits are fleshy and can be edible. The seeds are rounded, small, dark.
Ochoterena's spineless echinocereus is an elegant, almost smooth subspecies with soft, short, or absent spines. The stem is light green, cylindrical, up to 10-12 cm (4-4.7 in) in height and 5 cm (2 in) in diameter, with 6-8 blunt ribs. The surface is smooth, with noticeable areoles from which thin light bristles rarely emerge.
It flowers in spring. The flowers are large, up to 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter, bright yellow with glossy petals and a green tube. They are located at the apex of the stem. The fruits are green or light pink, juicy, opening when fully ripe. The seeds are rounded, dark brown.
