Sowing and germination

The seeds are enclosed in paired horn-shaped leaflets that open when ripe. The seeds are flat, light brown, equipped with a silky tuft for dispersal by the wind. Before sowing, the seeds are washed in hot (50-60°C) running water for several minutes, then soaked in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate for 1-2 hours. Stratification and scarification are not required. Sowing is done in spring or summer in a loose, well-drained substrate: a mixture of cactus substrate with perlite or coarse sand. The seeds are buried 2-3 mm and moistened with a spray bottle. The crops are covered with film or placed in a greenhouse and kept at a temperature of 20-25°C in diffused light. The substrate is kept constantly moist; waterlogging is unacceptable. Daily ventilation is mandatory.
