Agave PARRYI 'HUACHUCENSIS' - Huachuca agave, Parry's agave, Agave parryi 'Huachucensis'.
Agave is a genus of evergreen perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae, comprising about 300 species distributed on the Caribbean islands and in arid regions of North, Central, and South America. In cultivation, no more than 50 species are widespread.
Representatives of the genus form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with prickly margins and sharp tips. Leaves can be broad or narrow, colored in gray-green, glaucous, or green shades, sometimes with variegated coloration. The stem, as a rule, is shortened. The plants are adapted to prolonged droughts, spreading outward with powerful roots, absorbing moisture from surface soil layers and storing it in the leaves.
Flowering occurs at 15-20 years of age, after which the plant dies. A tall flower stalk emerges from the rosette of robust leaves, bearing at its top an inflorescence in the form of a panicle or raceme, usually yellow or cream-colored. The fruits are capsules with flat seeds. After seed maturation, the aerial parts of the mother plant die off, and daughter offshoots grow from the rhizomes.
Parry's agave grows individually or forms large compact colonies. The plant represents a spherical structure 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in) high and 30 to 80 cm (12 to 31 in) in diameter. Smooth, rigid leaves vary from green to gray, measuring 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in) in length, 15 to 20 mm (0.6 to 0.8 in) in width, and exhibit varying arrangements. Their shape is linear or lanceolate to ovate and curved upward. The leaves possess a sharp and sturdy terminal spine varying from gray to brown. Fibrous, reddish-brown leaf margins are irregularly toothed near the base. The paniculate inflorescence reaches a height of 3 to 5 m (10 to 16.4 ft). In the upper half, it forms 12 to 15 branches of irregular length. Flowers ranging from yellow to orange appear at the ends of branches and measure 60 to 75 mm (2.4 to 3.0 in) long. The fruits are ovoid or oblong three-chambered capsules 35 to 50 mm (1.4 to 2.0 in) long and 15 to 20 mm (0.6 to 0.8 in) wide. Irregularly shaped black seeds are 7 to 8 mm (0.28 to 0.31 in) long and 5 to 6 mm (0.20 to 0.24 in) wide. The flowering period lasts from June to August. This cultivar produces a flower spike that rises up to 7 m (23 ft). The flowers are lemon-yellow with a pink tint.
