Agave CHIAPENSIS - Chiapas Agave, Agave Chiapensis.
Agave is a genus of evergreen perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae, comprising about 300 species distributed across Caribbean islands and arid regions of North, Central, and South America. No more than 50 species are widespread in cultivation.
Members of the genus form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with spiny margins and sharp tips. The leaves can be broad or narrow, colored in grey-green, glaucous, or green shades, sometimes with variegated patterning. The stem is generally shortened. The plants are adapted to prolonged droughts, spreading broad with strong roots, absorbing moisture from surface soil layers, and storing it in their leaves.
Flowering occurs at 15-20 years of age, after which the plant dies. A tall flower spike emerges from the rosette of robust leaves, forming a panicle or raceme inflorescence at its apex, usually yellow or cream-colored. The fruits are capsules with flat seeds. Once the seeds ripen, the aerial parts of the mother plant die back, while daughter offsets sprout from the rhizomes.
Chiapas Agave is a medium-sized plant with handsome broad leaves. It is one of the greenest species. The stem is short. The rosette is solitary or branching, medium-sized, robust, up to 1 m (3.3 ft) across, open and symmetrical. The leaves are thick, smooth, light green to glaucous-green, variable, ovate, narrowed at the base, shortly acuminate, flat to slightly concave in the upper portion, and curved upward. The terminal spine is subulate, straight or curved, stout, 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in) long. Leaf length is typically 30-50 cm (12-20 in), and width is 7-16 cm (2.8-6.3 in).
The flower stalk is 1-2 m (3.3-6.6 ft) long, spike-like, with a long scape; the flowers open directly on the main stalk rather than on lateral branches. The flower buds are dark purple or reddish-purple. The flowers are triangular, fleshy, 60-70 mm (2.4-2.8 in) long, nestled among broad bracts. The perianth segments are yellow or green with a reddish or purple tinge, the funnelform tube is 8-12 cm (3.1-4.7 in) long, and the unequal lobes are 30-32 mm (1.2-1.3 in) long.
It is found exclusively in the Mexican state of Chiapas between Oaxaca and the border with Guatemala.
