Sowing and germination

The seeds of the southern hackberry are medium in size, about five pieces per gram, enclosed in a dense cellular stone. To increase germination, cold, wet stratification is needed - the seeds are mixed with wet sand and kept for 2-3 months at a temperature of 3-5°C; at home, the bottom shelf of the refrigerator is suitable, the sand is moistened and mixed every 1-2 weeks. After stratification, the seeds are soaked in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate for several hours, and then for 12-24 hours in warm water with the addition of a growth stimulator: SUPERthrive, HB-101, Aminozol, Epin or Zircon. Then the seeds are sown in a light, breathable substrate to a depth of 1-3 cm, moistened with a spray bottle, placed in a greenhouse or covered with film and germinated in the light, but not in the sun, at a temperature of 18-20°C - a night drop to 10°C stimulates germination.
