Puya MIRABILIS - Wonderful puya, Miraculous puya, Puya mirabilis.
Puya is a genus of perennial terrestrial bromeliad plants in the family Bromeliaceae, distributed from Costa Rica to South America. Most representatives of the genus are associated with open mountainous, rocky, and dry habitats, especially with the Andes and adjacent regions, where the plants endure bright sun, winds, temperature fluctuations, and rapid drying of the soil.
The plants form dense or loose rosettes of long stiff leaves, often with prickly or toothed margins. Unlike many tropical bromeliads, puyas are predominantly terrestrial xerophytic plants adapted not to standing water in the rosette, but to life in well-drained mineral soil. The sizes of representatives of the genus vary from compact species to very large rosette plants.
The flowers are gathered on sturdy peduncles into spicate, racemose, or paniculate inflorescences. The flower coloration in different species can be greenish, yellow, blue, violet, red, or almost black. After flowering, fruits with numerous seeds form, which in many species are lightweight and winged, capable of wind dispersal.
Puya mirabilis is an evergreen terrestrial bromeliad, naturally distributed in Bolivia and northwestern Argentina. The plant forms a loose rosette of narrow, stiff leaves in gray-green, light green, or bronzy-green shades. The leaves can reach about 60 cm (24 in) in length, have fine teeth along the margin, and pointed tips, so during repotting and maintenance the plant is handled with care.
Young plants remain relatively compact, while mature rosettes are capable of producing a sturdy peduncle with yellowish-green bell-shaped flowers. Under good conditions, flowering can be very impressive: the flowers are large for the genus, located on a prominent peduncle and contrasting with the narrow foliage. After flowering, fruits with winged seeds are formed.
In cultivation, Puya mirabilis is valued as an unusual drought-tolerant bromeliad with an architectural rosette and rare flowering. It is suitable for sunny windowsills, cool winter gardens, greenhouses, container collections of xerophytic bromeliads, and dry compositions with plants that require plenty of light and good soil drainage.
