Hedychium GARDNERIANUM - Kahili ginger, Gardner's hedychium, Ginger lily, Butterfly ginger, Gardnerianum.
Hedychium is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), comprising about 100 species native to Southeast Asia. Its distribution range includes Thailand, the Himalayas, Indonesia, Southern China, and Madagascar. Among the plants belonging to the genus, there are invasive species.
The genus includes perennial fast-growing herbs with tuberous rhizomes that grow terrestrially or as epiphytes. All varieties are similar in appearance, but differ in the color and structure of inflorescences. Plant height is 120–170 cm (47–67 in). The leaves are narrowly oval, light green, sessile, symmetrical, and clasp the sturdy shoot.
The plant possesses vivid ornamental appeal, attracting admiration with beautiful foliage and flowering with a pleasant floral scent. Gardeners cultivate some species in their garden beds as exotic plants, creating a tropical backdrop.
Kahili ginger is an evergreen herbaceous plant reaching 1–2 m (3.3–6.6 ft) in height in its natural habitat. The leaves are smooth, green, elliptic, pointed at the tips, up to 45 cm (18 in) long. It blooms in late summer with very attractive inflorescences of greenish-yellow flowers featuring crimson-red stamens.
