Agave NUSSAVIORUM - Nussaviorum agave, Agave nussaviorum.
Agave is a genus of evergreen perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae, comprising about 300 species distributed across the Caribbean islands and in arid regions of North, Central, and South America. In cultivation, no more than 50 species are widespread.
Representatives of the genus form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with prickly margins and sharp tips. Leaves can be broad or narrow, colored in gray-green, glaucous, or green shades, sometimes with variegated coloration. The stem, as a rule, is shortened. The plants are adapted to prolonged droughts, spreading outward with powerful roots, absorbing moisture from surface soil layers and storing it in the leaves.
Flowering occurs at 15-20 years of age, after which the plant dies. A tall flower stalk emerges from the rosette of robust leaves, bearing at its top an inflorescence in the form of a panicle or raceme, usually yellow or cream-colored. The fruits are capsules with flat seeds. After seed maturation, the aerial parts of the mother plant die off, and daughter offshoots grow from the rhizomes.
Nussaviorum agave is a rare and little-known agave species from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, especially characteristic of the San Pedro and San Pablo Nuxaño (Nussavio) region. It is valued by collectors for its unusual shape and compact size. It grows solitary, 30 to 50 cm (12-20 in) in height and 40 to 60 cm (16-24 in) in width. Lanceolate, oblong-ovate, rigid, light green or bluish curved leaves are 12 to 40 cm (4.7-16 in) long and 5 to 11 cm (2-4.3 in) wide. The leaf margins are irregularly serrated. The terminal spine, brownish to gray with a variable needle-like shape, is up to 3 cm (1.2 in) long. The inflorescence is an erect panicle 1.5 to 6 m (5-20 ft) in height. Yellow, loosely arranged bell-shaped flowers appear in the upper half of the inflorescence and are 50 to 70 mm (2-2.8 in) long. The flower tube is up to 4.5 cm (1.8 in) in length. Fruits are elongated three-chambered capsules 45 to 65 mm (1.8-2.6 in) long and 20 to 25 mm (0.8-1 in) wide. Shiny black crescent-shaped seeds are 5 to 7 mm (0.2-0.28 in) long and 4 to 6 mm (0.16-0.24 in) wide. The flowering period lasts from August to December.
