Agave KERCHOVEI - Kerchove's agave, Agave kerchovei.
Agave is a genus of evergreen perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae, comprising about 300 species distributed across the Caribbean islands and in arid regions of North, Central, and South America. In cultivation, no more than 50 species are widespread.
Representatives of the genus form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with prickly margins and sharp tips. Leaves can be broad or narrow, colored in gray-green, glaucous, or green shades, sometimes with variegated coloration. The stem, as a rule, is shortened. The plants are adapted to prolonged droughts, spreading outward with powerful roots, absorbing moisture from surface soil layers and storing it in the leaves.
Flowering occurs at 15-20 years of age, after which the plant dies. A tall flower stalk emerges from the rosette of robust leaves, bearing at its top an inflorescence in the form of a panicle or raceme, usually yellow or cream-colored. The fruits are capsules with flat seeds. After seed maturation, the aerial parts of the mother plant die off, and daughter offshoots grow from the rhizomes.
Kerchove's agave forms a short stem and grows solitarily or with offsets. Rosettes develop from the axils of lower leaves. Variable, lanceolate, thick, rigid leaves from green to yellow in color are 40 to 125 cm (16-49 in) long and 5 to 12 cm (2-4.7 in) wide. The upper and lower sides of the leaf differ in shape. Horny leaf margins are flexibly dentate. The terminal spine, brownish to gray, is 3 to 6 cm (1.2-2.4 in) long. The inflorescence is 2.5 to 5 m (8.2-16 ft) tall. Flowers from green to purple in color appear densely in the upper section and are 38 to 46 mm (1.5-1.8 in) long. The open flower tube is 4 to 6 mm (0.16-0.24 in) in length. Fruits are elongated three-chambered capsules 25 to 35 mm (1-1.4 in) long and 10 to 12 mm (0.4-0.47 in) wide. Shiny black seeds of irregular shape are 3.5 to 4 mm (0.14-0.16 in) long and 2.5 to 3 mm (0.1-0.12 in) wide. The flowering period continues from July to September.
