Agave ASPERRIMA - Rough agave, Agave asperrima.
Agave is a genus of evergreen perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae, comprising about 300 species distributed across the Caribbean islands and in arid regions of North, Central, and South America. In cultivation, no more than 50 species are widespread.
Representatives of the genus form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with prickly margins and sharp tips. Leaves can be broad or narrow, colored in gray-green, glaucous, or green shades, sometimes with variegated coloration. The stem, as a rule, is shortened. The plants are adapted to prolonged droughts, spreading outward with powerful roots, absorbing moisture from surface soil layers and storing it in the leaves.
Flowering occurs at 15-20 years of age, after which the plant dies. A tall flower stalk emerges from the rosette of robust leaves, bearing at its top an inflorescence in the form of a panicle or raceme, usually yellow or cream-colored. The fruits are capsules with flat seeds. After seed maturation, the aerial parts of the mother plant die off, and daughter offshoots grow from the rhizomes.
Rough agave forms open rosettes, suckers abundantly, and sometimes produces sparse shoots. It reaches a growth height of 70 to 100 cm (28-39 in) and a diameter of up to 200 cm (79 in). Variable, loose, rough, lanceolate leaves, ranging from light green to bluish in color, are 60 to 110 cm (24-43 in) long and 12 to 16 cm (4.7-6.3 in) wide. The margins of the leaves are sparsely cornified, with variable serration. The brown terminal spine is 3.5 to 6 cm (1.4-2.4 in) in length. The inflorescence reaches 4-6 m (13-20 ft) in height. The inflorescence is slender, broad, reaching 4-6 m (13-20 ft) in height. Narrow yellow flowers 60 to 80 mm (2.4-3.1 in) long appear in the upper section of the inflorescence on irregularly arranged small branches. The floral tube is 13 to 20 mm (0.5-0.8 in) in length. Fruits are capsules 40 to 50 mm (1.6-2 in) long and 6 to 7 mm (0.24-0.28 in) wide. The flowering period continues from April to July.
