Agave MONTANA - Mountain Agave, Agave montana.
Agave is a genus of evergreen perennial herbaceous plants in the Asparagus family (Asparagaceae), including about 300 species distributed in the Caribbean islands and in arid regions of North, Central, and South America. No more than 50 species are common in cultivation.
Representatives of the genus form rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with prickly margins and sharp tips. The leaves can be wide or narrow, colored in gray-green, glaucous, or green shades, sometimes with variegated coloration. The stem, as a rule, is shortened. The plants are adapted to prolonged droughts, spreading outward with powerful roots, absorbing moisture from the surface layers of the soil and storing it in their leaves.
Flowering occurs at the age of 15-20 years, after which the plant dies. A tall flower stalk emerges from the rosette of robust leaves, bearing an inflorescence in the form of a panicle or raceme at the top, usually yellow or cream-colored. The fruits are capsules with flat seeds. After the seeds mature, the aboveground parts of the mother plant die off, and daughter offsets grow from the rhizomes.
Mountain agave grows solitarily. Height ranges from 90 to 125 cm (35.4-49.2 in), and width from 140 to 170 cm (55.1-66.9 in). The elliptic, variably arranged leaves are yellow-green, 30 to 40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) long and 15 to 17 cm (5.9-6.7 in) wide. The leaf margins are irregularly toothed. The terminal spine, reddish to dark brown, is 3 to 5 cm (1.2-2.0 in) long. The inflorescence is paniculate, robust, erect-ovoid, 3 to 5 m (9.8-16.4 ft) tall. Numerous green to yellow flowers, 60 to 70 mm (2.4-2.8 in) long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form up to the tip on loose and variable branches. The floral tube is up to 20 mm (0.8 in) long. The fruits are elongated, dark brown, three-chambered capsules 50 to 60 mm (2.0-2.4 in) long and 15 to 20 mm (0.6-0.8 in) wide. The seeds are shiny black, 5 to 6 mm (0.20-0.24 in) long and 3 to 4 mm (0.12-0.16 in) wide. The flowering period lasts from April to May.
