Desmos CHINENSIS - Chinese desmos, Dwarf Ylang-Ylang, Desmos chinensis.
Desmos is a genus of shrubby plants in the custard apple family (Annonaceae), uniting 27 distinct species. The distribution range of plants of this genus spans tropical latitudes of Eastern and Southern Asia. A great diversity of representatives grows on the territory of the Philippines and Nepal. In the natural environment, they mainly grow in open areas and tolerate moisture deficits quite well.
All plants represent shrubs up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in height. Some of them are climbing and woody lianas. There are both evergreen and deciduous forms. Leaf blades are entire, simple, with pinnate venation.
Flowers are located in leaf axils. They have a pronounced pleasant scent. Buds can be solitary or gathered into inflorescences. Flowers have a 9-part perianth consisting of three whorls of tepals. Fruits are represented by a solitary or fused berry with a fleshy shell.
Chinese desmos is an interesting climbing species that forms a trailing flowering bush of rounded shape. In the presence of a support it can grow up to 4 m (13.1 ft); in its absence, no higher than 1.5 m (4.9 ft). This is an ornamental form that grows excellently under indoor conditions. It is in high demand due to its undemanding nature, pleasant fragrance, and beautiful large flowers. After planting seeds, first flowering is expected in 2-3 years.
