Etlingera ELATIOR 'RED' - Red torch ginger, Torch ginger, Red torch, Emperor's torch, Flame lily, Porcelain rose, Etlingera elatior 'Red'.
Etlingera is a genus of perennial, incredibly beautiful plants in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), comprising more than 100 species. In the natural environment, plants inhabit equatorial latitudes of the Indo-Pacific regions, in Laos, China, Malaysia, or Cambodia.
Representatives of the genus grow in groups and externally resemble woody plants or even bamboo. Roots are fleshy, firmly anchored in the ground. It reproduces by rhizomes; shoots can grow out from the mother plant over quite long distances. Leaves are long, bright green, of lanceolate shape.
In some species, flower clusters resemble roses; in others, they are a ginger flower with a dense core and petals opening at the sides. Flowers are of a bright red, pinkish, salmon tint with a waxy bract. A distinctive feature of all species is that the lower petals are rolled into a tube.
Cultivating Etlingera in temperate climates is possible only under greenhouse conditions, but breeders have developed cultivars that can be grown in an apartment. These include Pink Torch and Red Torch. Their leaves possess a characteristic ginger fragrance, and inflorescences create coziness and serenity.
Torch ginger resembles a torch in the shape of its inflorescence and floral stem, which gave rise to one of the names of this species - torch ginger. Stems are vertical, with 1-meter (3.3-foot) leathery leaves, dark maroon beneath and dark green above. It reaches 4 m (13.1 ft) in height. On a bare peduncle with a cone-shaped flower head surrounded by large, slightly nodding bracts, showy flowers bloom as if covered with wax.
