Codonopsis VIRIDIS - Green bonnet bellflower, Codonopsis viridis, Bellflower, Campanula.
Codonopsis is a genus of perennial plants in the family Campanulaceae. In the wild, they can be encountered predominantly in East and Central Asia. Due to good adaptability and resilience, this plant is actively used for greening across different climatic zones.
The genus is represented by lianas with a very massive root system; most species climb well and are suitable for creating borders, arches, and hedges. The leaves are of a rich green hue, and depending on the species or cultivar may be broader or narrower. The stems twine or cling to a support. Depending on the species, they can reach a height of three meters (10 ft).
The flowers have a shape characteristic of bellflowers, nodding downward. They may vary in color and structural details among different species. Patterns and speckles on the inner surface of the petals create an interesting decorative effect. Seeds mature in small brown capsules.
Green bonnet bellflower is one of the rare species whose natural range is limited to certain regions of China. It climbs well and features good frost tolerance. The flowers are greenish-yellow with a fine spotted pattern inside. When care guidelines are followed, it blooms, as a rule, in the very first year after sowing. It enjoys both bright, sunny spots and partial shade.
