Stenocarpus is a genus of tropical trees in the Protea family (Proteaceae), in the natural environment growing mainly in Australia and New Guinea in moist rainforests.
The trunks of the plants are usually straight, reaching an impressive height from 6 to 40 m (19.7 to 131.2 ft). Roots are resilient and form a sturdy system, providing trees with stability. Leaves are large, oval or lanceolate, bright green.
Flowers of representatives of this genus are large, bright red, gathered in inflorescences or umbels, making them attractive to pollinating insects. After flowering, fruits appear on the trees, which are multi-seeded winged follicles.
Firewheel tree is a distinctive species named for the shape of its leaves. Leaves have deep and graceful sinuses along the margins, giving them a wavy outline. They are large, wide, often reaching 30 cm (11.8 in) in length. Flowers are double and have varied shades, such as red, pink, orange, or cream.
