Sowing and germination

Sow in autumn after cool weather has begun. Use deep pots or seed trays filled with a well-drained mix of equal parts river or silica sand and finely sifted compost. Sow the seeds 3-5 mm deep, space them thinly, and place the container in light shade. Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged, preferably watering gently in the morning so the foliage can dry before night. Fresh seed normally germinates in 3-4 weeks.
